Welcome to the second installment of our “Spring Into IEP Season” series! In our second part, we will be asking you the hard-hitting questions to prepare you for your Spring IEP. Yes, we are already clearing a shelf for our imminent Peabody.
The start of Spring always means one thing: Spring Cleaning! When you imagine Spring Cleaning, surely the big plastic trash bags, yellow rubber gloves, and the gray feather dusters come to mind. If you have a student with an IEP, in addition to the bags, the gloves, and the dusters coming to mind, that pesky IEP does too.
Time to dust off that current IEP that’s been taking up space in the accordion file you swore would keep you more organized. Or, for those who love their devices, time to sort through all those promotional emails to find when your case carrier sent that IEP notification. The good news is if you’re searching in your inbox the IEP and nearly 100 triennial assessments should stick out.
🪣Once you locate your student’s previous IEP, it’s important to ask yourself a few questions: 🪣
🫧Do the present levels, goals, accommodations/supports, services, and/or behavior plans reflect where my child is today?
🫧What progress have I seen?
🫧Are there gaps that need addressing?
🫧Do I have up-to-date data?
🫧Can my student’s needs be better addressed with an Extended School Year (ESY)?
It’s crucial that you reflect on your child’s needs before your Spring IEP so you can prepare and give input during your meeting.
*This is the second of four blogs to come in the next few weeks, to help you better prepare for the whirlwind that is Spring IEP Season!
